Catalina J. Sugayan Joins Sedgwick Chicago as Insurance Practice Partner

Catalina J. Sugayan, who has more than 20 years’ experience in insurance coverage and litigation, has joined Sedgwick’s Chicago office. Sugayan is a partner and member of the firm’s Insurance Practices group. Also joining Sedgwick’s Chicago office is associate David M. Dolendi, who worked with Sugayan at their former firm.

Sugayan provides domestic and international insurers with coverage analysis, risk management counsel and litigation defense. Her services include policy drafting, claims evaluation, coverage opinions, claims resolution and monitoring of high-exposure cases. She also defends insurers in complex litigation and coverage disputes in state and federal court and in mediation proceedings. Her clients include leading U.S. and U.K. insurers as well as government entities, universities, school districts, churches and professionals.

Sugayan is the author of four editions of “Coverage and Liability Issues in Sexual Misconduct Claims” (Munich Reinsurance America) and “Coverage for Sexual Misconduct, Harassment and Discrimination Claims” (Mealey’s Emerging Insurance Disputes).

She is a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of Professional Insurance Women. She was recognized as an Illinois Leading Lawyer in insurance, insurance coverage and reinsurance (2005, 2006 and 2007).

Sugayan is admitted in Illinois and before the U.S. Supreme Court. She is also admitted to appear before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth, Seventh and Ninth Circuits; the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, the Eastern District of Michigan, the Northern District of California and the Northern District of Illinois (including the Trial Bar); and Illinois Supreme Court.

She received her J.D. from Boston University and her B.A. from the University of Michigan, where she received high honors in Economics.

Dolendi focuses his practice on litigation defense, coverage advice and risk analysis for insurers. He received his J.D., cum laude, from The John Marshall Law School, where he was on the Dean’s List and editor-in-chief of The John Marshall Law Review. Dolendi graduated with an M.P.A. from Arizona State University and a B.S. from Illinois State University.
