For the second year in a row, Sedgwick was a sponsor of San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association’s Noche de Gala, an annual fundraiser benefitting nonprofit Bay Area Latino Lawyers Fund, which annually funds several fellowship grants for deserving law students who intern during the summer to provide direct services to underrepresented communities.
Noche de Gala 2012 was organized by SFLRLA 2012 President Sigrid Irías, a Sedgwick attorney. Irías previously served SFLRLA on its standing committees, as its vice president of membership, and as its general counsel, before being elected president for this year.
Publicity for the event was boosted by artwork for invitations and programs donated by renowned San Francisco artist Michael Rios, known for the album covers he has done for Carlos Santana. The event completely sold out, with more than 350 people attending, including many members of the judiciary and government officials as well as Sedgwick attorneys Kelly Nugent, Eliza Rodrígues, Denise Trani-Morris and Kirsten Mickelson. Local news anchor Ysabel Durón emceed a program that included Associate Justice Maria P. Rivera as the keynote speaker, and the Honorable Cruz Reynoso swore in the 2012 SFLRLA officers and directors.
Recipients of the first round of the 2012 fellowships awarded by Bay Area Latino Lawyers Fund were announced. These law students will be working this summer at the Immigration Center for Women & Children in San Francisco, at the California Appellate Project, and at the Employment Law Center in the Gender Equity and LGBT Rights Program.
Sedgwick is very pleased to support the Bay Area Latino Lawyers Fund in its efforts to assist not only the law students who receive the fellowship awards, but also the communities they serve during their summer internships.
