James Holmes Appointed Chair of ABA’s SOGI Commission

May 2012

Sedgwick Los Angeles partner Jim Holmes has been appointed by the American Bar Association (ABA) to chair of the Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) for a one-year term, effective August 5, 2012.  Holmes, an active member of SOGI for several years, served as the TIPS (Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section) liaison for one year and three years as a commissioner.  He replaces Courtney Joslin, acting professor of law at the University of California Davis School of Law, and will lead 13 commissioners who influence the programs, policies and activities pursued by SOGI.

Holmes serves as chair of Sedgwick’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Action Committee and leads the firm’s Media, Entertainment and Privacy Law Group.  He represents major media and entertainment entities in litigation regarding trademark and copyright infringement and breach of contract actions. He also represents and advises several major insurance carriers insuring media and entertainment entities.

Established in 2007, the SOGI Commission seeks to secure full and equal participation in the ABA, the legal profession and the justice system for LGBT persons.  In the interest of promoting full diversity and inclusion, the SOGI Commission consists of heterosexual and homosexual members of the legal profession.
