Joseph Larsen Receives FOIFT’s James Madison Award

August 2010

Joseph Larsen, special counsel in Sedgwick's Houston office, was honored with the James Madison Award presented by the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas (FOIFT). The James Madison Award is given annually to honor those who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and service in upholding the principles of the First Amendment.  Larsen received this award for his advocacy on behalf of the citizens of Texas and his support of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas.  Larsen has been instrumental in countless cases that have upheld the constitutionality of the Texas Public Information Act (TPIA) and Texas Open Meetings Act (TOMA) and have narrowed the scope of exemptions under these acts. He monitors significant cases in this area and drafts amicus briefs when the voices of the public might not be adequately heard or might need a little more support before the judiciary.  He has given many hours to assisting reporters, editors and ordinary citizens in their various quests to obtain information in the hands of governmental bodies.  Larsen frequently conducts seminars on the topics of the TOMA and TPIA and has spoken at numerous venues on the fundamental importance of and issues regarding transparency in government.
