According to a recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) news release, 500 million smartphone users worldwide will be using a medical or healthcare application by 2015. Mobile medical applications include a variety of functions, ranging from monitoring calorie intake, helping people maintain a healthy lifestyle, and allowing doctors to view a patient's x-rays. As stated by the director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Jeffrey Shuren, MD, JD, "[t]he use of mobile medical apps on smart phones and tablets is revolutionizing health care delivery."
