Biography
Gregory C. Read, one of Sedgwick's senior partners, has extensive experience in the areas of complex litigation, aviation, products liability, and mass tort. Mr. Read is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Litigation Matters
Representative matters of Mr. Read include:
- Lead counsel for major oil company in multidistrict coordinated litigation arising out of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 accident.
- Lead counsel for major corporation in consolidated actions by aircraft owners/lessors seeking damages in excess of $500 million relating to conversions of Boeing 747s from passenger to cargo configuration.
- Lead counsel for a storage tank manufacturer in coordinated actions filed by more than 500 plaintiffs for personal injuries and property damage caused by leaking underground chemical storage tank.
- Lead and coordinating counsel for a major airline in multidistrict litigation brought by more than 200 passengers for physical and injuries allegedly sustained in an international airline accident.
- In a widely publicized case, successfully defended national cosmetics company in a multi-million dollar breach of contract action against the company and Elizabeth Taylor relating to Ms. Taylor's "Passion" perfume.
- Co-lead counsel for utility in actions brought by more than 600 plaintiffs for physical and emotional injuries allegedly caused by exposure to contaminated groundwater. Later the subject of major motion picture.
- Trial counsel for major general aviation manufacturer since 1973 in a wide variety of products liability actions in numerous Northern California counties.
- Defended utility in action arising out of helicopter accident which resulted in death of rock promoter Bill Graham.
- Counsel for component manufacturer in action brought by family of R&B singer Aaliyah who died in an aircraft accident in the Bahamas.
- Represented manufacturer of aircraft which crashed in Bosnia, resulting in 9 deaths, including the President of Macedonia.
Affiliations, Activities and Accomplishments
Mr. Read served as the 2000-2001 president of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC), and was one of three managing directors of the IADC’s National Jury Trial Innovations Project, a multi-year program to introduce proposed changes in the U.S. jury system to attorneys and judges in all 50 states. He was the Dean of the 2006 Corporate Counsel College and served on the 1988 faculty of the IADC Trial Academy. Mr. Read is also active in the Defense Research Institute (Board of Directors, 1999-2002) and Lawyers for Civil Justice (LCJ) (Board of Directors, 1999-2002).
Mr. Read is a member of the California and Illinois Bar Associations, the American Bar Association, the Lawyers Pilot’s Bar Association, and the Northern California Association of Defense Counsel.
He was appointed by the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court to serve on California’s Task Force on Jury System Improvements. He has testified on numerous occasions regarding the defense view of proposed legislation and rules changes before the California Assembly Judiciary Committee, California Senate Judiciary Committee, and two Federal Civil Rules Advisory Committees.
Mr. Read is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and one of 243 lawyers world-wide selected for inclusion in An International Who’s Who of Product Liability Defense Lawyers. He is listed in the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers, Who’s Who in American Law, and Best Lawyers in America. He was selected as one of the Bay Area's best lawyers by Bay Area Lawyer Magazine and named a Northern California Super Lawyer by San Francisco magazine. In 2005, he was a recipient of the University of Illinois College of Law’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Mr. Read served three years (1968-70) in the United States Navy as a JAGC officer, and was appointed chief prosecutor for the Fifth Naval District Law Center in Norfolk, Virginia. He has tried more than 300 civil and military trials to verdict.
