For law students, a summer at Sedgwick means a season of practical experience because our summer associates are given real work on active cases - the same type of assignments first-year attorneys receive. Summer associates assist in the development of case strategy, review and write memos and briefs, and help prepare for and attend depositions and court appearances, while working with partners and associates as possible. Each assigning attorney provides feedback directly to the summer associate following the completion of each project. We also provide a formal review in the middle of the summer and at the end of the program.
In addition to hands-on practical experience, our summer associates attend a series of seminars as part of our firmwide training program, Sedgwick University. Course topics include everything from legal ethics to capturing your time to working a room and developing business. Summer associates are also enrolled in the firm's Mentoring Program to begin the transition from the classroom to life at Sedgwick. Each participant in our summer program is assigned a senior mentor and a junior mentor who serve as coaches and role models.
Our program includes opportunities for summer associates to socialize with Sedgwick attorneys outside the office. These activities include weekly gatherings at local cultural and sporting events, and informal dinners at favorite restaurants.
Our 10-week Summer Program generally starts in June, but is not available in all Sedgwick offices, every year. Salaries are determined by each office participating in the program. We use the summer program as one of our primary recruitment tools. While no offers are guaranteed, our goal is to make an offer to each qualified summer associate.
We try to give summer associates as many opportunities to work in different areas and with as many attorneys as possible. Sedgwick's summer program provides a well-rounded work experience and the opportunity to gain real world experience.
