Texas Partner Named Associate of the Year by Broadcasters Group
August 2009
Laura Lee Prather, a partner in Sedgwick's Austin office and member of our Media, Entertainment and Sports Law Group, has been named “Associate of the Year,” an award presented by the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB) honoring an individual for outstanding service to the industry or for significant accomplishments. The award, which had not been given for several years, was recently bestowed to Prather for her tireless efforts in getting a reporter’s privilege passed in Texas. Prather championed the cause for three legislative sessions and led the negotiations and strategy that resulted in the ultimate passage into law of the Texas Free Flow of Information Act on May 13, 2009. As a result, she is the leading authority on the legislation in the state.
In addition to her involvement with TAB, Prather serves as the general counsel for the Texas Daily Newspaper Association and the Texas Press Association, which were also at the forefront on passing the Act. She serves as a co-chair for the American Bar Association's Women in Communications Law Committee for the 2009-2011 term, the editorial board of the American Bar Association's Litigation magazine and as a co-chair of the American Bar Association's First Amendment and Media Litigation Committee.
TAB is the largest state association of broadcasters in the nation with more than 1,200 free, over-the-air radio and television station members. It was established in 1953 to promote and protect a favorable economic and regulatory climate for broadcasting and educate members and the public at large about the opportunities available and advances possible through the efforts of free, over-the-air broadcast operations.
